General surgery, despite its name, is a specialized area of surgery that focuses on abdominal organ ( liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and hernias. General surgeons are trained in emergency surgery. Bleeding, infections, bowel obstructions and organ operations are the main problems that they deal with. Rupture of the appendix is another common emergency. Their residency (training) lasts 5-7 years for general surgery and then 1-2 more years for fellowship training.

Here at Suncoast Surgical Associates, most of our surgeons have undergone specialized (fellowship) training in specific areas. We have surgeons who are fellowship trained in laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery and in colorectal surgery.
