Busting Common Myths About Bariatric Surgery: Separating Fact from Fiction

There are a lot of misconceptions and negative judgments surrounding bariatric surgery, so we want to take the time to bust them and put some positivity out there. In this blog, we’re going to chat about bariatric surgery risks, three facts about bariatric surgery, and answer this very common question: is bariatric surgery safe? Let’s get started.

Three Myths About Bariatric Surgery That Just Aren’t True

#1: Bariatric Surgery Is Dangerous

So… is bariatric surgery safe?

Absolutely. There are many safety measures in place during your surgery. While there are risks associated with any surgical procedure, our team of surgeons is incredibly skilled in lots of procedures, including bariatric surgery. The most recent stats say this type of surgery has a morbidity risk of only 0.13%.

Bariatric Surgery Risks

The risks associated with bariatric surgery mainly include post-op infection, bleeding, and risks associated with anesthesia. Your surgeon will go over the potential risks with you.

#2: Bariatric Surgery Is Only for the Severely Obese

While this is what we typically think of bariatric surgery being for, not all patients who can benefit from this surgery are severely obese. In fact, the eligibility criteria are more inclusive than you might think:

  1. A BMI of 40 or higher, which is considered severely obese.

  2. A BMI of 35 to 39.9 along with serious weight-related health problems such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or severe sleep apnea.

  3. Previous efforts have been made to lose weight through diet and exercise, supervised by healthcare providers, without achieving sustainable weight loss.

  4. Psychological evaluation has been passed.

#3: Bariatric Surgery Is a Last Resort

This one isn’t necessarily true, either. Keep in mind that obesity carries its own set of risks; the only last resort is giving up. If bariatric surgery can help you get your life back and your body back, should it be a last resort? We don’t think so!

In fact, early intervention provides better long-term outcomes. The longer you struggle with methods that don’t work, the longer your body is suffering.

Choosing bariatric surgery doesn’t mean you didn’t fight. You already have.

What Are Three Facts About Bariatric Surgery?

Now that we’ve busted some myths, lets cover some fast facts:

  1. It has a high success rate, especially in patients with Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.

  2. There are two options available: gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. Each is slightly different and your surgeon will help you choose what’s right for you.

  3. Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix. You will need to stick with your diet and exercise plan. This type of procedure is an aid in your journey.
